Record number of visitors from Australia, December 2016

I had to pick up a friend arriving from Perth at Auckland airport in December and couldn’t believe the amount of planes arriving from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Curious I wondered what ratio of visitors were NZ passport holders, like my friend and how many of those are Australians here for a holiday.

Here’s a few things I learned:

Total Visitors for December 2016: 494,193 up 11.1% on 2016

Arrivals from Australia for December 2016: 193,680 up 16,288 on 2015

97,632 of the visitors from Australia are visiting family and friends

108,128 are travelling on Australian Passports

71,168 are on New Zealand Passports

YoY the number arriving from Australia (on Australian passports) during December has been increasing, with the NZ passport holders remaining steady.

I’d be intrigued to know (based on economic indicators, that is outside my level of skill) what impact these returning expats have on our economy.

When me and family would return to NZ for a 4 week holiday, no expense was spared. We’re not wealthy, but definitely more frivolous during a classic Kiwi summer with car hire, food and drink.

I would like more Kiwis to return to NZ, as I’ve outlined in a previous post  but after being back for a year and reading these numbers I now have some reservations

My friends earn more in Australia than they did in NZ. I can assume many more do as well but don’t have concrete data. I try to avoid assumption in any argument, so go ahead a prove me wrong in the comments below.

The money they spend whilst in NZ is great for our economy and is converted from Australian Dollars, so helps many industries

Is it better for our economy to have visitors bringing in foreign money than it is to house and find jobs ?

If they were all to return to NZ tomorrow, would we have sufficient housing and importantly jobs?

It’s great to see so many pile into our little Auckland airport. Proud Kiwi’s bouncing through the gates, being welcomed by whanau ready to enjoy a kiwi summer.
